In the recent study of literacy rates in the State of Georgia, researchers found that insufficient vocabulary, comprehension and literacy skills negatively impact children for the rest of their lives. In Georgia, nearly three-quarters of children who are poor readers in 3rd grade remain poor readers throughout high school, and these children are more likely to drop out of school. The most alarming news is 85% of all children involved in the juvenile justice system are functionally illiterate. These statistics show that most children who are not intellectually equipped by the 3rd grade will either drop out, become incarcerated, or struggle with chronic unemployed or a low paying jobs.
